Juan Verdugo is a partner in the Finance department in the Madrid office of DLA Piper Spain, where he leads the Restructuring practice. His multidisciplinary profile allows him to offer first class advice in special situations (restructuring plans, insolvency, non-performing loans, cross-border transactions, debt structuring, operational restructurings, downsizing & relocations, debt-to-equity, loan-to-own, acquisition of distressed companies or businesses through pre-packs or bankruptcy proceedings). He has advised debtors, creditors, financiers and partners in some of the most relevant and complex restructuring plans in Spain, several of them with cross-border effects.

Within the secondary debt market, he has more than 15 years of experience advising investment funds and financial institutions in the purchase and sale of portfolios of non-performing loans ("NPLs") and single names. Juan also advises buyers of NPLs in the review of their workout models and processes, applying innovative, efficient and executive approaches.

He is well versed in the debt servicing industry and regularly advises servicers on regulatory issues (registration, supervision and sanctions) and on their portfolio and vehicle divestitures.

Juan has an excellent track record in the design and execution of collateral packages, defense of reinstatement actions and liability actions of distressed servicers, where he has successfully led the defense in court of very relevant cases. His experience and knowledge of D&O policies have made him a benchmark in corporate risk management and an expert in the ‘grey zone’ of corporate insolvency.
