In the 1820s, Manuel Aguilar Chacón established Bufete Aguilar, the first law firm in Costa Rica. The firm offered "full service" and served "the wealthiest landowners and the most important industrial enterprises". The cross-border regional perspective was already present: Don Manuel graduated in Nicaragua, practiced in Guatemala and Costa Rica, married a woman from El Salvador, and was an active politician in the integrationist efforts of the Central American federation. He served for a time as head of state and was also a businessman who invested in mining and coffee.
His son, Mauro Aguilar, reopened the firm after Don Manuel’s death, and he himself left a significant legacy, participating in the enactment of important laws as chief minister to Costa Rica’s national and Hispanic hero, Juan Rafael Mora Porras. What remains of the Aguilar Law Firm is in our possession today.
The history of the Castillo family is equally illustrious. Bernal Díaz del Castillo helped found Guatemala in 1524. He settled there and, at the end of his life, wrote an acclaimed book called La Verdadera Historia de la Conquista de la Nueva España, perhaps the most famous account of that historic event.
The firm offered "full service" and served "the wealthiest landowners and the most important industrial enterprises". In 1876, two Castillo brothers founded what is now known as Cervecería Centroamericana, the oldest and largest brewery in Central America. The company recently celebrated its 130th anniversary and has become a very important part of the company’s history.
