CIIAM Administered €149 Million in Arbitration Cases in 2025, Up 17% Year-on-Year
The Madrid International and Ibero-American Arbitration Center (CIIAM) administered 16 proceedings in 2025 with an aggregate amount in dispute of €149.6 million, representing a 17% increase compared to 2024. Since 2020, the Center has managed 68 cases totaling €424.9 million in dispute.
The average value of cases exceeded €9 million in 2025, above the Center’s historical average of more than €6 million.
Regarding the nationality of the parties, Spain accounted for 41% of cases, followed by the United Kingdom (20%), China and Italy (8% each), and Portugal (5%). A total of 62.5% of cases resulted from referrals by founding courts, while 37.5% arose from the inclusion of the CIIAM clause in commercial contracts.
By sector, corporate, insurance and engineering disputes each represented 18.75% of the caseload, followed by construction and professional services (12.5% each). Sports, energy, and financial and banking sectors were also represented .
Two-thirds of proceedings (66.7%) were conducted in Spanish and 33.3% in English . In expedited proceedings, the average duration was 10.17 months.
As for arbitrator appointments, 50% were made directly by the Center, 30% through a list procedure, and 20% by agreement. Seventy-two percent of arbitrators were Ibero-American, and 67% were women, compared to 31% in 2024.
