Santiago Carregal elected new Chairman of Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal

Santiago Carregal has been elected Chairman of Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal effective December 12, 2017.  Santiago will take over from Alfredo O’Farrell, who will retire in August 2018, in accordance with the firm’s mandatory retirement age. 

Santiago Carregal has over 30 years’ experience as a lawyer and heads Marval’s Banking and Finance department. He has represented companies, multilateral agencies and investment banks in a wide range of structured finance transactions, project finance, work-outs and M&As, and has long been ranked as a top-tier lawyer by the leading legal directories. Santiago joined Marval as a partner in 1997 and has been a member of its executive board since 2004. Prior to joining Marval, he was a partner at Carregal & Funes de Rioja. He served as general counsel of JP Morgan’s Buenos Aires Branch, having worked at Shearman & Sterling’s New York office as a foreign associate, and completed his LL.M. at the University of Illinois. Santiago will continue to practice as an active member of the firm’s Banking and Finance department. 

Alfredo O’Farrell is retiring due to Marval’s mandatory retirement policy. Under Alfredo’s leadership, Marval consolidated its position as the leading full-service firm in Argentina, as well as one of the most highly respected firms across Latin America. Over the past decade, Alfredo led a strategic plan that allowed Marval to remain twice the size of its nearest competitor in Argentina, while continuously developing as a fully institutionalized law firm and strengthening its international profile. Most recently, he oversaw a full rebranding project for the firm’s 90th anniversary and subsequent move to exclusive new premises in Buenos Aires.
