Arias Advises Switchback Medical on its International Expansion to Costa Rica
ARIAS has provided comprehensive legal counsel to Switchback Medical, a U.S.-based company specializing in the contract manufacturing of minimally invasive medical devices, in its expansion into Costa Rica—marking its first international venture.
ARIAS’s support ranged from the analysis and selection of the most suitable free trade zone park for the company’s new facility to the design of the strategy for entering the Free Trade Zone Regime, a key step to maximizing both fiscal and operational benefits.
Switchback Medical selected Costa Rica as the location for its new operations, joining the country’s dynamic Life Sciences cluster, which has significantly contributed to Costa Rica’s GDP and exports in recent years.
Throughout the process, ARIAS’s free trade zone team facilitated discussions between Switchback Medical and government entities such as the Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX) and the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (PROCOMER), supporting the company in preparing to apply for the regime and formalize its investment in the country.
In addition, ARIAS’s real estate team led the drafting of a detailed RFP to assess free trade zone parks, advised on lease agreement negotiations, and provided guidance on local real estate regulations and industry practices.
The attorneys from ARIAS Costa Rica involved in this transaction were partner Carlos Camacho, Senior Counsel Vivian Gazel, Free Trade Zone and Government Affairs Manager Laura Pérez, and paralegal Ariana Benavides.
