Brasil may adhere to the Madrid Protocol

The House of Representatives approved the text of the Madrid Protocol about the international registration of marks.

Now, it is in charge of the Senate to decide if Brazil adheres to the treaty that allows the owner of the trademark to have, with a single solicitation of registration filed in his country of origin, the protection of this trademark in other nations.

The Chamber’s decision comes precisely 23 years after the Protocol came into force (April 1996) and has already been ratified by 120 countries.

In order for the adhesion to work, the National Institute of Industrial Property needs to modernize and adapt some technical aspects of its trademark system.
