Oscar Mago: Leadership, Innovation, and 20 Years of Client Service at OMC Abogados & Consultores

October 23, 2025

Latin Counsel has had the privilege of interviewing Oscar Mago, founding partner of OMC Abogados & Consultores, who celebrates two decades at the helm of a firm consistently praised for its "precise and diligent communication" and "high-quality advice" in intellectual property (WTR 1000). Over these 20 years, Mago has cemented a culture that prioritizes long-term, "highly collaborative" relationships and 24/7 availability with every client. His leadership, described as "proactive and practical," has guided the firm from a local boutique to an organization with an international presence, achieving an agile structure that combines legal rigor, constant innovation, and a deep commitment to excellence and trust.

Latin Counsel: This month marks 20 years since the founding of OMC Abogados & Consultores. What does this milestone mean to you and how has it influenced the firm’s culture?

Oscar Mago: Reaching 20 years represents much more than just a number. It is the reflection of a sustained path of effort, learning, and commitment to our clients. Since its foundation, OMC Abogados & Consultores was born with the conviction to offer an excellent legal service, based on professional ethics and closeness with every client. Throughout these two decades, we have consolidated an internal culture focused on continuous training, teamwork, and constant innovation. Every member of the firm understands that individual growth only makes sense if it contributes to collective development. That shared vision is, undoubtedly, the essence that has allowed us to remain relevant and evolving over these twenty years. Furthermore, we maintain firm policies that have made us a benchmark for our clients: responding to all inquiries within the same day, providing 24/7 availability, and maintaining a direct, personal, and close relationship with every client. These practices, which we consider true registered trademarks of the firm, reflect our commitment to excellence and the trust we have built over time.

Latin Counsel: What key learnings from these two decades have been instrumental to the firm’s vision and strategy?

Oscar Mago: During these twenty years, we have learned that the success of a law firm does not solely depend on legal knowledge, but on the capacity to adapt, anticipate, and maintain a trusting relationship with every client.
One of the most important lessons has been understanding that professional excellence requires constant updating. Laws change, markets evolve, and clients’ needs transform; therefore, at OMC Abogados & Consultores, we have adopted a strategy based on continuous training and innovation in our processes.
Unlike traditional firms, which often confuse institutionalism with strategy and prioritize form over substance, at OMC Abogados & Consultores, we break out of that mold. Our focus is on the client: their preferences, their needs, and their projects. We accompany them hand-in-hand in their growth, in their day-to-day, providing personalized and close solutions that generate real value.
We have developed strategic alliances with firms in different countries and expanded our international presence, which allows us to assist our clients in operations and registrations across various markets.
In summary, experience has taught us that a firm is sustained over time not only by what it knows, but by the way it supports and represents its clients with commitment, coherence, and professionalism.

Latin Counsel: How has the firm evolved in terms of clients, landmark cases, and service focus since its inception?

Oscar Mago: Since our beginnings, OMC Abogados & Consultores has evolved from being a local firm with a strong focus on intellectual property, to becoming a full-service organization that advises national and international companies in diverse areas of corporate, regulatory, and health law.
The growth of our client portfolio reflects that evolution. Today, we serve startups and expanding businesses, as well as large corporations that trust us to protect their assets, optimize their legal strategies, and support their operations in the region.
Throughout these years, we have participated in landmark cases that set precedents in intellectual property matters and in complex proceedings before INDECOPI, which has allowed us to consolidate a reputation for excellence and technical specialization.
Likewise, we have taken on a role in legal consulting related to medicinal cannabis, actively participating in regulatory development and the formalization of companies operating in this emerging sector. This commitment reflects our innovative vision and our capacity to provide legal solutions in areas that combine health, regulation, and social responsibility.
In terms of service focus, we have moved from a traditional model to one centered on the client experience. Our priority is personalized attention, immediate responses, and the constant search for practical solutions. At OMC Abogados & Consultores, we understand that every client is unique, and that is why we offer close support and strategies tailored to their objectives, combining legal rigor with empathy and commitment.

Latin Counsel: What internal and external challenges have you faced in growing from a boutique firm to one with a greater regional presence?

Oscar Mago: Growth always brings new challenges. Moving from being a boutique firm to one with a global presence required us to rethink internal structures, processes, and management standards, without losing the essence that defines us: closeness and personal commitment to every client.
Internally, one of the main challenges was maintaining the same quality of service and the direct communication that distinguishes us, even while expanding our teams and practice areas. To achieve this, we reinforced constant training, technological integration, and coordination among our different work units, so that every professional shares the same values and approach.
Digitalization has been key in this process. We incorporated technological tools that optimize file management, deadline tracking, and communication with our clients in real-time. These innovations allow us to maintain the efficiency and agility typical of a boutique firm, but with the structure and scope of an organization with an international presence.
Externally, we faced the challenge of competing in an increasingly globalized environment, where clients demand comprehensive solutions and immediate responses. The adaptation to different regulations and business cultures—especially in the Asian market, where we have a significant presence—has been a constant learning experience that has enriched us professionally and humanly. Traveling frequently to meet personally with our clients abroad has allowed us to build close, dynamic, and trusting relationships that reflect our philosophy of direct and personalized service.
Despite the challenges, we have maintained a flexible structure that allows us to offer an agile, personalized, and high-quality service. That ability to grow without losing identity is, without a doubt, one of the greatest strengths of OMC Abogados & Consultores.

Latin Counsel: What organizational or cultural changes did you implement to celebrate and sustain service quality over these 20 years?

Oscar Mago: Throughout these twenty years, we have understood that quality is not a result, but a constant process that requires commitment, discipline, and evolution. At OMC Abogados & Consultores, every stage of growth has been accompanied by organizational and cultural changes that reinforce our vision of excellence and closeness.
On the organizational level, we have implemented more dynamic and horizontal structures that promote direct communication among partners, lawyers, and administrative staff. This openness fosters collaboration, speeds up decision-making, and ensures that all members of the firm share a common service vision.
We have also institutionalized continuous training and legal updating programs, combined with internal mentorship spaces. We firmly believe that investing in the development of our team is the best way to ensure the quality we offer our clients.
Culturally, we cultivate an atmosphere of respect, commitment, and pride in belonging to the firm. We foster a culture of immediate response, personalized attention, and genuine interest in every case. Furthermore, we celebrate collective and individual achievements, recognizing that the firm’s success is the result of joint effort. Finally, beyond the results and recognition, we are profoundly proud of the human team that makes up OMC Abogados & Consultores. We are a professional family united by shared values, a passion for law, and the conviction that the best way to serve is with integrity, empathy, and excellence. That spirit is, undoubtedly, what has allowed us to get here and what will continue to drive us in the years to come.

Latin Counsel: What lessons in negotiation and out-of-court settlement do you consider essential for young lawyers in your country?

Oscar Mago: I believe these issues are vitally important not only for lawyers, but for anyone, in any area of their professional or personal life. In particular, young lawyers should start by learning and internalizing the four fundamental pillars of effective negotiation:

a) Separate the people from the problem;
b) Focus on interests, not positions;
c) Generate mutually beneficial options; and
d) Base decisions on objective criteria.

These principles apply not only in professional practice, but in any human interaction that seeks to resolve conflicts in a constructive and lasting way.
As for out-of-court settlement, it is an essential tool that every lawyer should keep in mind as a first step in resolving disputes. It involves an approach focused on the client’s real interests, prioritizing efficient solutions that avoid the emotional, financial, and time-consuming wear and tear of a court case.

Latin Counsel: What led you to dedicate yourself to law, and what events or influences marked that decision in your youth?

Oscar Mago: To be honest, Law was not my first choice. Since I was a child, I dreamed of pursuing a diplomatic career because I was passionate about travel, learning about other cultures, and, of course, politics. However, destiny had other plans. When I was almost finished with my Law degree, I decided to drop everything and leave for Paris to dedicate myself to literature—writing and reading have always been my two great passions.
The trip was carefully planned in stages: first, I would go to Miami, where I would stay for a while with a Peruvian friend, a professional tennis player, to work and earn some money; then I would travel to Canada to visit my aunt and cousins before finally continuing to Paris. But luckily—I believe now—only the first stage was fulfilled. An accident in Miami forced me to return to Lima, where I finally completed my Law degree.
Looking back, that unexpected turn was decisive. It allowed me to understand that Law can also be a form of expression, creation, and service. Through it, I found a different way to fulfil what I had always sought: to understand the human being, connect with different realities, and contribute, from my profession, to generate positive changes.
