The firm’s name dates back to 1911, when Max Guyer and Dardo Regules met at law school and formed a close friendship. They graduated as lawyers and decided to found Guyer & Regules.
At the time, lawyers in Uruguay traditionally practised individually, so the young lawyers’ association went no further than sharing an office and some expenses.
A generalist lawyer, Dardo Regules built a public profile as one of the leaders of the “Unión Cívica”, the Catholic party of the time. During those politically turbulent years, his reputation for moral integrity was such that, despite his disagreements with the government, he was appointed Minister of the Interior, overseeing the police force and the electoral process. After completing his term as minister peacefully, he returned to private practice.
When Dardo Regules—the last of the firm’s founders still alive—died in 1961, the young lawyers who had joined the firm in the preceding years carried on under the leadership of his son, Gilberto Regules. They upheld the values and excellence that defined the firm while laying the foundations for a more modern firm.
In 1992, with Gilberto Regules no longer at the firm, a third generational transition took place, bringing a new generation of professionals into leadership. They have guided the firm in keeping with the same values, excellence and professionalism that have defined it since its founding.
