Its origins date back to 1896, when Juan Bautista Bance founded a legal practice to serve a group of prominent clients and established close ties with leading international law firms.
In 1945, the Bance legal practice was succeeded by a civil partnership formed by its active lawyers, Carlos Mendoza, Esteban Palacios Blanco and Miguel Ángel Páez Pumar, together with Dr. Arminio Borjas.
The new partnership was formally established in 1951 under the name Mendoza, Palacios, Borjas, Páez Pumar & Cía. It grew by bringing in some of Venezuela’s most talented lawyers, including Manuel Acedo Mendoza, Arminio Borjas Hernández and Leopoldo Borjas Hernández.
In 1973, the firm adopted its current name: Mendoza, Palacios, Acedo, Borjas, Páez Pumar & Cía.
Throughout its history, its members have held senior political and academic positions, including President of the Federal Court of Cassation; judges and justices of the Supreme Court of Justice; directors and President of the Central Bank of Venezuela; President and full members of the Academy of Political and Social Sciences; Minister of Finance; Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; the President of the Republic’s Commissioner for Economic Affairs; Minister of Development; vice-presidents of the Supreme Electoral Council; and the first President of the Caracas Stock Exchange.
Others have been distinguished professors at leading Venezuelan universities and authors of legal works widely recognised in academic and professional circles, as well as by domestic and foreign courts.
The business and management training of its lawyers, together with the experience they have gained as in-house counsel at domestic and multinational companies, gives our firm a practical and technical advantage in addressing its clients’ commercial and business matters.
