«Treat your art collection as you would treat your other financial interests» - Maria de Peverelli, Head of Art Management at Stonehage Fleming

Maria de Peverelli discusses Stonehage’s family office approach to collection management

"Increasingly, collections represent a more significant portion of a collector’s total wealth. My team manages around $2.5 of art at the moment. It’s understandable then that many of our clients and other owners of important collections increasingly employ risk management strategies similar to those used for investment management," she told guests at a Stonehage Fleming webinar discussing Latin American Art in the Global Arena, ahead of Art Basel Miami, taking place from December 6-8th 2024.

Stonehage Fleming Art Management’s clients are mainly international families requiring support with the management of their art collections. In line with its family office model, the team approaches collection management in a very "holistic" way. "We don’t focus solely on the transaction – meaning the acquisition of a specific artwork. Rather we concentrate on the lifecycle, both of an artwork and its place in a collection."

Stonehage Fleming’s Art Management team supports families at every stage of the process of acquiring, moving and owning art

As with other valuable assets, discussion of the ‘stewardship’ of art starts well before it is in the hands of the current ‘owner’. "My team and I cater for a selected number of clients that span from the first to the seventh generation of collectors. We support these families to think strategically about the life and future of a collection."

The team also assists with all the many processes that precede an art acquisition, and: "everything that has to do with ownership – historical research, art market research, logistics, loans to exhibitions, plans for sales, framing, lighting, conservation, you name it, everything."

Process, though, should never get in the way of a collector’s appreciation of the art they acquire, said Maria. "Our goal is to make sure that our clients enjoy their collections. That, for me, is the whole point. Let us deal with all the rest."

Maria de Peverelli is a Partner and Executive Chairman of Stonehage Fleming Art Management, serving a client base that includes individuals, family offices, foundations, trusts and estates.
