The firm was founded in 1893 by Arturo Alessandri Palma, President of Chile between 1920-1925 and 1932-1938. Today the firm has over 25 attorneys, all legal specialists and graduates from Chile’s leading law schools, with postgraduate degrees from universities such as Harvard, Cornell, New York, Wisconsin and The London School of Economics and Political Science. Several of the firm’s attorneys are also university professors and write for specialized publications. The majority belong to international professional organizations or associations for lawyers, business and protection of intellectual and industrial property or bilateral chambers of commerce.

The firm has long-standing relationships with major international law firms and financial institutions around the world, in which several of its attorneys have worked as foreign associates. Fluency in English, French, German and Portuguese enable the firm’s attorneys to serve individuals, institutions and businesses in five continents.

Amongst the firm’s clients are multinational organizations, private and state owned companies in Chile and overseas, banks and financial institutions, telecommunications companies, the media and insurance companies.

The General Practice Area has extensive experience in foreign investment, privatizations, mergers and acquisitions as well as in financing and debt restructuring, bond issues and private placements. It has also had considerable success in the litigation area.

For over 20 years, financial projects have been one of the firm’s most important practices. The firm played a key role in the enactment of the regulations allowing the placement of ADRs in Wall Street for Chilean companies. More recently, it was a key contributor to the first registration of a foreign mutual fund for public offering in Chile.

The firm’s Intellectual Property Area is one of the largest in Chile. It represents the most important companies and institutions both nationally and internationally and has a large team of highly regarded professionals with different specializations. Several of them played an important role in drawing up Chile’s Intellectual Property legislation.
