Galicia bolsters TMT and Artificial Intelligence practice by adding Xavier Careaga from Meta (formerly Facebook) as Counsel

Galicia Abogados has announced the appointment of Xavier Careaga as Counsel.

The former Meta (formerly Facebook) lawyer joins the firm to strengthen its Technology, Media, Telecommunications (TMT) and Artificial Intelligence area, promoting the firm’s institutional digital transformation strategy.

Prior to joining Galicia, Xavier served as Deputy General Counsel of Meta (formerly Facebook) for 32 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

During this period, Xavier led the design and implementation of successful global technology systems for efficiency and optimisation.

Careaga has extensive experience in technology, media and telecommunications law in Latin America, especially in developing innovative legal strategies to protect our clients’ services, products and business models.

His expertise focuses on advising on complex matters related to artificial intelligence (AI), e-commerce, consumer protection, digital intellectual property, data privacy, regulated digital goods, entertainment, commercial digital media and content, cybersecurity and standardisation as well as the development of new technologies.

As part of the academic aspect of his background, Xavier participated in the negotiations of technology law chapters of the USMCA and other bills, and has recognised experience with clients spanning social media and e-commerce platforms, satellite telecommunications services, MVNOs, mobility applications, streaming services, OTTs, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Xavier holds a law degree from the Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City and a master’s degree in technology law from Harvard Law School.
