White & Case promotes Alejandro Martinez de Hoz to Counsel in Washington D.C.

White & Case announced the promotion of Alejandro Martinez de Hoz to Counsel in its global International Arbitration team.

White & Case is a global firm founded in 1901 with 44 offices in 30 countries around the world, including in Latin America.  The Firm has been ranked for years as the #1 firm in the world in international arbitration (Global Arbitration Review (GAR), 2015-2019, 2021) as well as the #1 firm in Latin America (Latinvex, 2017-2023).

Martínez de Hoz is an Argentine lawyer working in Washington D.C. on disputes in Latin America, representing foreign investors and states in investment arbitrations under international treaties, commercial arbitrations, mediations and complex negotiations related to disputes in the region. He has also been part of White & Case’s Mexico City office. 

The matters he has worked on include pioneering cases such as the first arbitration under the U.S.-Peru Free Trade Agreement, a dispute over the first privately financed hydroelectric plant in Guatemala, nationalization of pension funds in Latin America, contemporary compliance matters in the region, and billion dollar settlements in insurance, mining and sovereign debt. He has recently worked on LatinLawyer’s 2023 "Dispute of the Year", as well as in recent years received mentions in legal directories such as Legal500.


His experience includes arbitrations and mediations under the arbitration rules of the United Nations (UNCITRAL), the World Bank’s dispute resolution center (ICSID), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR, of the American Bar Association) and before the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague (PCA).  His experience spans several countries in the region (including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru) and business sectors (including renewables and energy, infrastructure, mining, insurance and pensions, sovereign debt). 

Mr. Martínez de Hoz has lectured at universities such as Fordham University, Georgetown University, University of Miami, Washington University, Monterrey University, and Universidad Austral. He has also acted as arbitrator and coached teams in different countries (Argentina, Uruguay, United States, India) for international arbitration competitions (Willem C. Vis, Philip C. Jessup, Foreign Direct Investment).  He has presented lectures and thought leadership articles in various Argentine and international publications, including think tanks in Washington D.C. such as the Inter-American Dialogue, and is a member of arbitration associations such as the Latin American Arbitration Association (ALARB).   

His career in Argentina included working at a leading firm and serving as President of the Young Lawyers Commission of the Buenos Aires Bar Association and on the Executive Committee of Idea Joven, being considered a sub-40 leader in Argentina by La Nación.  Prior to joining White & Case, he earned a Master of Laws degree from Fordham University in New York, and is co-founder of the Washington chapter of the Argentine Lawyers Association (ALANY).

His pro bono work has included the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice in New York, the association Conciencia en Argentina teaching the Constitution in public schools, and an award for his work for the United States - Mexico Foundation (USMF).  The latter award recognized his work at a historic moment in the binational agenda of both countries, along with a board of U.S. and Mexican business and civic leaders to promote Mexico’s economic and social development.  The leadership and effectiveness of his programs was recognized by a former U.S. President.
