Gómez-Acebo & Pombo has advised Avianca, Colombian airline owned by Grupo Abra, one of the largest air transport groups in Latin America, on an agreement to acquire a stake in the Spanish company Wamos Air, a world leader in air charter services based in Spain (Wet Lease).

With this operation, Grupo Abra expects to improve Latin America’s connectivity with Europe.

In turn, Wamos Air will benefit from the expertise of an experienced investor with a long-term vision to grow its operations to and from Latin America.

The GA_P team was formed by partner David González, Of Counsel Jorge Martín, and associates Luis Pinedo and Laura Roda. Also participating in the transaction were Marina Carreño and Jimena Sánchez, Banking associates; Juan Romero, Ignacio Castellanos and Manuel Ramos, Of Counsel and Public and Regulatory associates; Lourdes Escassi and Carmen Abad, Of Counsel and Labour associate; Bárbara Saiz and Elisa Gómez-Bernardo, Intellectual Property associates; Miguel Troncoso and Laura Lence, Competition partner and associate; Juan Sainz, Real Estate associate, and Maria de los Ángeles Chávarri, Litigation associate.

Adrian Neuhauser, CEO of Grupo Abra, said: "We welcome the signing of this agreement for many reasons. Firstly, because Wamos Air is a jewel in the world of ACMI and air charter operations and has global experience operating in multiple markets. Secondly, because its business model perfectly complements Abra’s vision and strategy to be a leader in air transport in Latin America. And third, because this partnership will allow us to participate in long-haul markets with wide-body aircraft in other countries beyond our current operation in Colombia".

Constantino de Oliveira, Chairman of Grupo Abra, commented: "We welcome Wamos Air to the Abra Group. The investment we are making undoubtedly demonstrates the continued strength of our group, and will open the door to further internationalisation to realise more synergies between our businesses and continue opportunities to connect Latin American countries not only with each other, but with the rest of the world".
