Our History
The Firm’s origins date back to 1923, in the early years of the second Radical government. By then, the renowned Sáenz Peña Law, which established universal, secret and compulsory voting, had been in force for more than 10 years. Against this backdrop, brothers Juan and Enrique de Marval joined forces and founded what would later become Argentina’s largest law firm. It initially began as an agency specialising in matters related to industrial and intellectual property.
In its early years, Estudio Marval weathered local and international crises, including the 1929 stock market crash, the outbreak of the Second World War and multiple changes of government in Argentina. After 15 years in business, and with the arrival of Jorge E. O’Farrell in 1938, the firm adopted a new name: Marval & O’Farrell. His arrival led to the creation of the firm’s legal department, enabling it to expand its practice areas. Jorge E. O’Farrell focused in particular on business law, with an emphasis on general commercial law, tax law and industrial property law.
