Juan M. Diehl Moreno has led the FinTech Department and been a partner in the Banking and Corporate Finance Department since 2006. He has extensive experience in FinTech, foreign investment, banking and foreign exchange law, and capital markets.
In response to the impact of digital innovation on financial services, in recent years he has advised FinTech innovators and financial institutions on strategy as they develop and adopt products and services across areas including electronic payment platforms and applications, digital wallets, digital lending and factoring, blockchain and cryptoassets, and digital banking businesses.
His practice also focuses on local and international commercial and financial transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, bilateral and syndicated loans, corporate liability restructuring, trust structuring, real estate and construction transactions, foreign exchange controls, IPOs, public and private debt offerings, and a wide range of commercial contracts. He has advised companies, banks and multilateral lending institutions on more than 100 transactions.
Between 2002 and 2006, he advised the Telecom Argentina group (comprising four companies in two countries) on the restructuring of more than USD 4 000 million in financial debt, the largest private restructuring in Argentina’s history. In recent years, he has also worked on company sales, including the sale of Isolux Corsán’s renewable energy projects in Argentina, Cargill’s meat and flour divisions, the sale of Páginas Amarillas and the acquisition of Cubecorp. In 2015 and 2016, he advised Telecom Italia on the sale of Grupo Telecom Argentina to Grupo FinTech for USD 960 million.
Leading industry guides Chambers & Partners, International Financial Law Review (IFLR 1000), Practical Law Company (PLC), International Law Office (ILO) and Apertura magazine have recognized Juan Diehl Moreno for several years as a leading lawyer in banking law in Argentina. In 2019, Who’s Who Legal recognized him as a recommended lawyer in the FinTech category, and in 2020 Leaders League rated him excellent in FinTech. In 2016 and 2018, he received the Client Choice Award (ILO) in the Banking category and, in 2017, in the Asset Finance category for Argentina.
Chambers & Partners has ranked Juan in Band 1 for FinTech and describes him as “an exceptional lawyer, who is not only able to handle banking and FinTech legal matters, but also has a broad understanding of their commercial context” and “well suited and proactive in providing deep insights and finding solutions to our regulatory needs”. It also highlights his political and practical sense in transactions, “which makes it easy for a multinational company to work with him”.
Before joining Marval, he was with Estudio Carregal & Funes de Rioja from 1989 to 1997. In 2000 and 2001, he was a foreign associate at Sidley Austin in New York, US.
He graduated with a law degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina in 1993, earned a master’s degree in business law from Universidad Austral in 1996, with a thesis graded magna cum laude, and a Master of Laws from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, US, in 2001, graduating with honours.
He coordinates the legal working group of the LACChain Ecosystem for Argentina, led by IDB Lab, and is an active member of various professional groups. He is also involved in institutions dedicated to developing commercial exchange, including the Consejo Empresario Argentino Ruso (CEAR), where he serves as vice-president. He is a member of the Argentine Banking Lawyers Committee.
He has participated as a panellist and moderator at conferences in Argentina and abroad. He has published several articles and papers on his areas of expertise in leading legal, finance and FinTech publications.
