The firm was founded in 1893 by Arturo Alessandri Palma, who served twice as President of Chile (1920–1925 and 1932–1938). Since then, five generations of lawyers have contributed their knowledge and experience not only to their clients but also to public service in the country, helping the firm become one of Chile’s most prestigious law firms.
Alessandri’s practice areas reflect the high standard of legal services provided by its lawyers, covering the needs of companies, individuals and institutions of all sizes.
Hundreds of domestic and international companies have been and continue to be served by its lawyers in aviation, public procurement and administrative law, banking law, finance and investment, copyright, entertainment and sport, tax, mergers and acquisitions, innovation and patenting, employment, social security and immigration, litigation and arbitration, competition law, trademarks, advertising regulation and unfair competition, environment, energy, mining and water, capital markets, intellectual property, personal data protection and privacy, projects, engineering and construction, bankruptcy, insolvency and business reorganisation, insurance, technology, media and telecommunications.
Its clients have traditionally been foreign, from the United States and Europe, with an increasingly strong presence from Asian markets. They span a wide range of industries, including financial institutions, pharmaceuticals, mining and service providers, among others. Its integrated, cross-practice approach enables the firm to offer clients flexibility and support them at every stage of innovation or renewal. The firm uses advanced technology and has a multidisciplinary team with a practical, business-oriented approach.
Alessandri and its lawyers have for years been recognised by leading international rankings across all categories of intellectual property worldwide. In 2011 and 2018, the firm received the Law Firm of the Year award from the British magazine Managing Intellectual Property. Its lawyers are ranked year after year by Chambers & Partners, Leaders League, WTR 1000 and IAM Patents, among others.
Alessandri’s team of more than 50 lawyers has addressed the challenges posed by ongoing regulatory change in labelling, advertising and administrative approvals for global brands in increasingly regulated product categories, including alcohol, tobacco and other substances, and, more recently, food and pharmaceuticals. The firm therefore participates regularly in working groups with government authorities and local and foreign trade associations. It also has longstanding professional relationships with leading international law firms and financial institutions around the world.
The firm’s work rests on four pillars: professional excellence, efficiency, commitment and honesty. Its lawyers consider it their duty to help clients prevent and resolve disputes while advancing their interests and objectives. By valuing clients’ time and drawing on its lawyers’ strong training, the firm provides highly specialised services promptly. Respect for professional ethics is part of the firm’s tradition. One of its partners is a member of the Chilean Bar Association’s Council and also played an active role in establishing, through the association, the Legal Aid Service. The firm currently provides pro bono advice to non-profit organisations and people with limited means.
These values have made possible a long history, a broad client base and a large firm.
